Hathigaon
Jaipur, Rajasthan, India
Completion Date: Ongoing

A housing project for 100 elephants and their Mahouts (caretakers), Hathigaon (or elephant village) is situated at the foothills of Amber Palace, Jaipur. Through structuring the landscape that had been devastated by sand quarrying, a series of water-bodies were created to harvest the rain, as water is the most crucial resource in the desert climate. With the water resources in place, extensive tree plantation, together with seeding the site propagating local species, were carried out.

The water body is a critical component, as it facilitated the bonding between the mahout and elephant, through the process of bathing – an important ritual both for the health of the elephant as well as their attachment to their keeper.
